The 10 Best Autumn Candles

Updated: Apr 13, 2022

How do you choose the best autumn candles? What are the best autumn candles? We’re going to show you how to ensure you only buy the perfect candle this season — and which ten you should pick from.

How to Choose The Best Autumn Candle

One of the best autumn candles UK. A red candle surrounded by dried leaves and blueberries.

#1 Make Sure It’s Suitable for The Room

Scents help set the atmosphere in our home. Make sure the fragrance is inviting. You might want lighter scents with fruitier notes (orange, apple, etc.) or a heavier, spicier scent (clove, cinnamon, etc.).

It’s important to consider the room you want to put the candle in when choosing scents. If it’s too overpowering, it will interfere with food in the kitchen or dining room. Alternatively, a sweet food scent might stimulate hunger in the bedroom when all you’re trying to do is sleep!

#2 Know the Scent Throw

The scent throw is how the aroma fills the room. To put it simply, it’s all about the size of the candle compared to the size of the room. You should buy a candle that matches the area of the room.

No matter the strength of the candle, if it’s too small for your room, you won’t fully experience the aroma.

#3 Understand Burn Time

When shopping for a candle, size matters. But a big candle doesn’t automatically mean it’s longer lasting. You need to take a look at the burn time to figure this out.

There are plenty of factors affecting the burn time, including:

· Wick material

· Additional ingredients and their quality

· Type of wax

When we talk about the 10 best autumn candles later, we will give you an estimated burn time of each one so you can choose the most suitable one.

#4 Consider the Waxes

Nowadays, there are a lot of different waxes used in candles. The type you choose affects your whole candle experience. And of course, there are advantages and disadvantages to each one. Let’s look at each of them in more detail:

· Paraffin Wax — This is the most common and also the most affordable. It holds its fragrance well and is super easy to dye, ensuring a strong scent. Not to mention that the scent releases much faster than others with this one. Unfortunately, it doesn’t burn as evenly, and it can produce far more soot than others.

· Soy Wax — It’s natural and renewable, ensuring it’s more sustainable than paraffin. It burns at a lower temperature so lasts longer, as well as producing less soot. However, they tend to have a weaker fragrance and it releases more slowly than usual. They are great for small rooms because of this.

· Rapeseed Wax — Yay for another sustainable choice! Rapeseed is sourced in the UK, and it throws fragrance well. Plus, it burns slowly, allowing you to enjoy it for longer. Unfortunately, they’re not as easily accessible and tend to be more expensive. The good news is that it’s often combined with another wax type to make the candle more affordable.

#5 Find Out Which Wick You Like

Once you’ve considered the wax, it’s time to move onto the wick. You have two to choose from here — cotton or wood.

Cotton wicks are made from braided fibres and are the standard candle wick. They light easily and are wonderfully low maintenance. Not to mention that they’re unlikely to snuff out in a draughty room.

You might find that some cotton wicks have a paper centre. It creates a bigger, longer flame. But bear in mind that they burn at a hotter temperature! It provides a bigger melt pool ensuring a stronger scent. But they tend to burn pretty fast. Although, many of our best autumn candles with cotton wicks have a decent burn time.

Wooden wicks make a wonderful crackle sound like an open fire which gives an all-encompassing, multi-sensory experience. They burn hotter for a much longer time and give off a consistently strong fragrance. They’re certainly more impressive than the standard cotton wick.

We must mention here that you need to learn how to light wooden wicks beforehand. You have to tilt them at the proper angle for them to light effectively.

#6 Know The Container Type

Scented candles usually come in a glass or metal container. But let’s take a look at each turn to see which you prefer:

· Glass Jar — They are super aesthetic and can match any interior. Not to mention that you can see the candle through the jar. Who wouldn’t want that? But sadly, they’re a bit of a safety hazard. If you leave the candle to burn until it’s out, the glass will overheat and potentially crack.

· Metal Tin — These are sturdier and not easy to break. It’s also a much better conductor than glass, ensuring a strong scent. Oh, metal tends to be cheaper too! Just be careful when you try to touch it; metal gets frighteningly hot at times.
